Fantastic & Strange
Many photographers and filmmakers create fantastic and strange images. Mari Mahr and Jerry Uelsmann made surreal images using double exposure and overprinting. More recently, Igor Morski used digital technology to produce surreal images for his graphic products, and Penny Jensz uses mixed media with photographs to create fantastic and strange portraits. In 'A Game with Stones' by Jan Svenkmajer and 'Canon' by Norman McLaren, stop-frame animation is combined with film to produce fantastic and strange sequences.
I have chosen fantastic and strange, because I really like the idea of the complication and making a photo something it isn't.
I like the idea of taking really normal photos then playing around with the photo and changing the way it looks, it really interested me because I like the idea of doing something weird and unusual.

My mind map.
These are some of my ideas for my current theme.
My pinterest page.
I made a Pinterest board for the theme I've chosen, and theres an image of it below.
Jerry Uelsmann.

Jerry Uelsmann is a photographer who uses a darkroom as supposed to photoshop to create surreal images. He does this by layering the images over each other by using different enlargers. The pictures can look weird because there not something you would see in real life. There images you may see in a dream or images you may see in your head. the photographer tries to make someone looking at his images that it is subconscious rather than what your actually seeing with your eyes.

Mari Mahr research.
The work of Mari Mahr is personal and autobiographical, but she describes important ideas about where each of us comes from, and where we each belong.
Mari Mahr creates black and white images in small collections. Some of the work she has produced is culturally influenced by her native country of Hungary and the images of pre-war Europe which were passed down by her mother. She puts both images from her mother and others which is said to be memories of her past. She does this by adding objects to the existing pictures and re-photographing them.

First set of images.
WWW:
In my first set of images i think that they went quite well because i arranged the things in the images quite nice. also there all quite evened out and they are not really dodgy. |
EBI:
what could have been better is the edges of all the images are not exactly straight, some are quite slanted and they need to be straightened, by photoshop. |
Photo Shoot #2
This shoot used a small viewer which had a strange lens which split the subject up into lots of fragments. I used an iPhone to make the images because the lens was small enough. I liked the strange effect of the viewer.
Second set of images.
WWW:
These images have been edited by Photoshop. I cropped them square, so the image was focused on just the unusual part of the photo and not on the unnecessary parts. |
EBI:
These images would of been better if they were more in focus. This was difficult because of the size of the lens and the fact that I was only able to use a phone camera. |
My final piece.
In my final piece I've put about five to six images from my first photo shoot together, overlapping each other to make one photo, I decided to pick this ones as my final piece because I enjoyed doing the process of making this image, so I decided to pick it because I like all the colours together, it really stands out how bright the colours actually are, so I think its a really good picture to use as my final piece. I have split the image into 4 equal sections using Photoshop so that I can print them out A3 size and stick them back together to make an A1 image.
Final evaluation.
Final Evaluation
I have enjoyed responding to the theme of 'fantastic and strange '. I had seen some of Mani Mahr work online who inspired the collections of photos that I took, as well as Jerry Uelsmann who an artist whose work I took an interest in. I feel as though I have been able to produce a final piece that embraces their styles. I'm pleased with my final piece.
I have researched the named artists each have inspired me in different ways and given me ideas for photo shoots however Mani Mahr was the artist I took the most interest in. The camera I use most was a cannon. However using this camera meant that I had to wait to see the results compared to if I was using my iPhone as I could of used a range of apps to enhance the images.
I have experimented with lots of ways of editing and changing my photographs. I have used software programmes such as Photoshop and iPhoto, mainly to carry out the over lapping and editing of the pictures. The editing I did was colour editing where I played around with corrections and sharpening of colours to see how they looked in the piece. I feel as if I have attempted to be experimental in my approach to this project and been able to develop my technique as my work progressed.
My Weebly website has been the main place where I have documented my learning journey. I have used a combination of text posts, sideshows, galleries and interactive elements such as youtube videos to share what I have learnt through my research and work. I have shared my research and experiments in a logical way so that the viewer can see the processes that I have been through to get to my final piece and outcome.
